Our Story
It all started with a little patch. One night while giving my little girl a bath, I noticed that there was a little, round bald spot on her head. I had never seen a little bald spot like that and of course my mom brain started to worry-what could possibly cause that? So I googled it. I read all about alopecia and how rare it was for someone to lose all their hair...so I assured myself and my daughter that all would be fine. Our pediatrician echoed the same information and nonchalantly told us she was sure it would grow back. But as her hair continued to fall out, we saw all the doctors and tried all the options...rounds of doctors and testing and creams and wigs and advice wanted and unwanted. She has been completely bald, she has had bald spots, she has had George Kastanza hair. And she has rocked it all. So fast forward seven years later and here we are. I have a beautiful, strong, and remarkably brave little girl who wakes up everyday and faces the world with confidence and kindness, despite all she goes through. As her mom, I want to fix things for her. I want her to be able to walk into Target without being pointed at or without hearing for the millionth time someone ask her why she is bald. Unfortunately, I can't. But I can do something. So I decided to organize The Bare Hair, a race dedicated to spreading awareness about alopecia and raising funds to help cure it. In our first six years, we have had hundreds of people join us and we have raised over $27,000 dollars for alopecia charities. And we aren't done yet. So if you have alopecia or love someone who does, join us so we can support one another and raise money to help find a cure!
